The Magic Time Machine or MTM has been open since 1973 here in San Antonio, Texas.  That being said the building is old as it has been around about as long as I have (lol).  There is something to be said for continuity and us as United States Citizens keeping some of our traditions alive and historic buildings and businesses active!

Some History of MTM

The Magic Time Machine Restaurant first opened its doors in August of 1973, in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Jim Hasslocher's vision of fine food being served in an energized atmosphere by fun, not stuffy, servers became a reality.

Characters we encountered on our visit:

Buddy the Elf: 5 Stars Fabulously Awesome
Nacho Libre: 4 Stars Awesome
Shrek: 2 Stars Irritating, loud, bad makeup
Shaggy: 4 Stars Hilarious
Katniss: We saw her but did not interact
Princess Lei: 4 Planets Intergalactically Kind
Guardian of the Galaxy:  4 Stars PHOTO BOMBER!

Guardian of the Galaxy in the back photo bombing, We did not even notice him there!
He was not the only photo bomber!  We have 3 pics all with different characters in the matter of seconds where characters popped up in the back!  We did not notice it at all until we got home!

BALLOON GUY, My son as were we extremely impressed by his ballooning skills! He made my son a motorcycle out of a balloon!  My 11 year old is still talking about his balloon!

Buddy the Elf was our server/actor/character.  Buddy is the best and I mean best server I have ever encountered at the Magic Time Machine!  He is lively and had not only my 11 year old son (who is embarrassed at everything at this age) rolling with laughter, he had my fiancee cracking up!  Buddy is just as seen on the movie, with action, voice, phrases, and non- stop laughter!  He kept my fiancees soda WELL filled, which in his book is the best thing a server should do!

Shaggy Helped serve the dishes as well as helped Buddy out, along with his own duties.  Shaggy said like so much and man that I thought I was back in ...well... my childhood (I won't say the age lol)

Decor:

This is an older pic these chairs we did not see in the restaurant, however the restaurant is a huge maze and you can get lost.

The restaurant is darker like in this pic courtesy of google.com

This restaurant is older as we said, it opened in 1973.  It does need a thorough cleaning and a bit of updating.  Since my fiancee is very tall the restaurant is a bit cramped, however, they sat us in an area where he was quite comfy and we did not have to ask.  With that being said we were quite unable to get into or out of our seats without someone having to move to let us out.  The "Tea cup or Pineapple" style booths are very cramped.

In the 1990's the characters were more of a "time"period nature and it seemed there was much more room there.  My friends and I went there after work  a couple of times and we had a huge booth with large tables and plenty of room to move.  (maybe I was smaller then). LOL

The chairs we sat in had water stains on the satin seat cushioning, and one of them was wet.  The carpet could use a good cleaning or replacing.  Dusting items that are on the ceiling would be a great recommendation.

However, the restrooms are clean, the tables, plates, silverware, and salad cart were very clean.

Food Review:

I have read all of the Google.com Reviews online.  I am not sure what the people who wrote them are used to eating, or if cooks have changed since they went, however, the reviews I did not find to be what we encountered.

On the decor, it being dark, cleanliness, I do concur.

However, the food that we had (I will not say what we exactly had) was impeccable. The one consistent thing I have noticed in all my years of visiting is that the food is always great.  I did not see one item (including other guests food) that appeared to be a microwave meal as suggested in the google.com reviews.  All food was fresh, well cooked and absolutely tasted fabulous!

The only item I had an issue with is that the kids menu was not very kid friendly.  We all know kids like chicken nuggets, pizza, and hot-dogs.  This is not a chicken nugget restaurant, please keep this in mind,  So my son's pallet was expanded the evening we went and he ate something that he truly LOVED, with exception of the veggies.  He would rather have had carrots, corn, or green beans, he was served squash cooked with green peppers.  There is no choice on veggies for kiddos.

I did email and review MTM about our visit and my sons suggestions. They contacted me via email and said they would definitely take our suggestions about the kiddos menu.  However since the menu has been the same for many years, I am not sure they will change it.

Our free dessert from Buddy the Elf.
3 Cookies with whipped cream and sprinkles on top and strawberry or raspberry gel.
Every day is Christmas for Buddy the Elf.

Thank you for being awesome!
