Elija Johnson opened Mr. J's BBQ in 1998 with money earned from operating a food trailer on the East Side. In 2008 he retired, leaving the business to son Darrell Johnson and daughter-in-law Toni McKnight-Adams.
Darrell Johnson said his father specialized in brisket and was the best barbecue pit master you'd meet, a skill he learned growing up in Alabama.

Mr. J's is an older building smoke house style barbecue. The restaurant has been at this location for many years and is a neighborhood favorite.
They have picnic tables in the front underneath an awning for inclement weather. You may also sit inside the small dining area. There are 4 small tables and 2 diner style stools at a small bar (as seen in the pic). The food portions are BIG!

This is an older building so it is run down with age a bit, the outside they keep clean for it to be outside there is never any trash lying around or grub on the tables. The inside is old and there is no restroom, however they keep the tables clean and NOT sticky (for me sticky is my end all be all of grossness!)
My fiancee loves the meat, dressing with gravy & potato salad, and my son loves the ribs.
For me it is not my favorite barbecue restaurant, the sausage is dry, the gravy and greens taste a bit off, the brisket is a bit dry, and the potato salad is like mashed potatoes.
Since we live in TEXAS I have learned that everyone's idea of barbecue is vastly different, what I like you may not. With this in mind please eat at your own taste preference, my blog is to let you know about foods offered, cleanliness, price range, staffing, location, and give you location, contact info, and website information if necessary.
